Utah Delegates Turn Down Wine Gifts

August 18, 1992

HOUSTON (AP) _ Most Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention had a polite response when they received gift packets containing bottles of wine: Thanks, but no thanks.

Utah Republican Party Executive Director Dave Hansen was abashed when he announced at the delegations’ regular morning caucus that convention gift packets contained alcoholic beverages.

All but a handful of the 54 delegates and alternates are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Faithful Mormons eschew alcohol, coffee, and tobacco.

″Some of you might have noticed a liquid in the gift packets. It’s bad. Don’t drink it,″ Hansen joked. ″I’ll take it off your hands.″

Hansen said later that several bottles had been turned in. Other delegates intended to keep the wine as gifts to non-Mormon friends.
