Union Pines senior remembered for smile, work ethic after collapse at XC event
A student at Union Pines High School in Cameron died in the early morning hours of Sunday after collapsing at a cross country event in Charlotte on Saturday morning.
Samantha Davis, a senior at the school, collapsed on Saturday morning while running in the Hare & Hounds Invitational cross country meet at McAlpine Park in Charlotte. Davis died early on Sunday morning.
In addition to running cross country for Union Pines, Davis was a member of the school’s marching band.
“She had an infectious smile. When she walked into a room, it would light up the whole room.” Union Pines High Principal Andy McCormick says Samantha, well known as Sam, set the standard. “She was a pillar of our class of 2019. One of our best and brightest,” he said.
Band director Rob Hill said Davis was a leader in that activity, too.
“A lot of times, I’ll preach about work ethic, and she’s the example for that, and very positive too,” he said.
Davis’ father told WRAL News that she had been diagnosed with epilepsy in 2016, after a softball injury and some seizures.
John Davis said medication helped control his daughter’s seizures, and doctors had cleared her to run. It’s still unclear exactly what caused her to go into cardiac arrest Saturday.
A Go Fund Me page has been started for Davis’ family.
Classmates, friends and members of the high school sports community from other parts of the state have expressed their condolences on social media.
Hill said, “I intend to have the entire trumpet section play her part, loud and proud and that’s going to be a tribute to her.”
