ELBERTON, Ga. (AP) - Robert Lamar Williford, former publisher of The Elberton Star, died Thursday at a hospital at age 71.

Williford, who ran the The Star as editor and publisher from 1963 until 1979, was among the Georgia and South Carolina leaders responsible for building the Richard B. Russell Dam on the Savannah River.

In 1979, Williford sold The Star, along with The Hartwell Sun and The Royston News Leader, which he also owned, to Morris Communications.
