Surprise Strike at Air France

January 14, 1999

PARIS (AP) _ A surprise strike by some maintenance workers forced Air France to cancel at least 17 domestic flights on Thursday.

The state-run airline said about 20 maintenance workers blocked pilots’ access to their planes at Orly airport, south of Paris, forcing the cancellations. Domestic and international flights also were delayed.

The day-long strike also affected Charles de Gaulle airport, north of the capital and the hub for transatlantic flights. Details on the impact there were not available.

An accord signed Wednesday between unions representing ground personnel and Air France that established a framework for a 35-hour work week triggered the strike, according to Air France. The airline said the workers also are demanding a bonus for working nights.
