7 Badgers Reported Suspended
MADISON, Wis. (AP) _ Seven members of the Wisconsin basketball team were suspended Tuesday for violating team rules on the eve of a quarterfinal game in the Women’s NIT.
Coach Jane Albright issued the one-game suspensions at a team meeting. The team gave no details about the nature of the rule violations.
``It was handled within the context of the team,″ said Tamara Flarup, women’s athletics spokeswoman. ``The players were given that one-game suspension and they’ll be welcomed back after that.
``Jane met with the team at 4:15, handed out the suspensions at that time, then practice continued for the eight remaining players.″
Wisconsin (18-12) plays Michigan State (19-11) on Wednesday night.
Starting forward Jessie Stomski was among the seven suspended players. Also included was center Nina Smith, who recently returned from an injury and has started the past two games.
Others suspended were Krista Bird, Judy Ebeling, Leah Hefte, Sarah Jirovec and Candas Smith.
The Badgers beat DePaul 82-76 Sunday in the second round of the WNIT.
