Lady ’Stangs win Bronze Bracket Championship in Gator Winter Classic

January 6, 2019

HENDERSON — Valentina Limon opened up from three-point land to score a game-high 15 and lead the Needles Lady ’Stangs to the Bronze Bracket Championship in the seventh annual Gator Winter Classic girls basketball tournament at Henderson’ Green Valley High School Saturday afternoon.

After being pitted against much larger and more powerful teams in the opening games of pool play, Needles won their final three, topping the tourney by dusting Las Vegas’ Silverado High 44-24 to take the trophy.

Paige Murch added 13 to the final game’s tally, including a 5-for-8 performance from the free throw line to cap a tournament noted for its physicality. Marie Mills added seven which, uncharacteristically, included three shots from inside.

Silverado’s high scorer was K. Tanner, No. 13, with eight; followed by S. Trentina, No. 30, with seven.

Reflecting on the four-day tournament experience, Lady ’Stangs Head Coach Manuel Calderon said: “As a coaching staff we’re really proud of the way the girls performed.”
