Georgia county: Polluted water spilled into Allatoona Lake

January 29, 2019

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia county says millions of gallons of polluted water spilled into Allatoona Lake.

Cobb County said in a statement Tuesday that the polluted water spilled into Allatoona Lake over the weekend due to a failure at Cobb County Marietta Water Authority’s Wycoff Water Treatment Plant.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the accident resulted in “a large quantity” of lime slurry being released into the water treatment process, overwhelming the good bacteria that help clean the water of contaminants.

The statement says the water that was released into the reservoir was disinfected but didn’t meet the facility’s discharge standards. It says the water system is in the process of bringing in microorganisms from other plants to re-establish the bacteria population.

Officials say this has no impact on Cobb’s drinking water system.
