Four Missouri athletes qualify for NCAA Track & Field Championships
Jordan McClendon, Mirieli Santos, Roberto Vilches and Ja’Mari Ward will all compete in the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships March 8-9 in Birmingham, Alabama. The NCAA released its full list of Division I qualifiers Tuesday.
McClendon will compete in the women’s weight throw, and the 71-foot-4.75-inch mark she threw at the Husker Invitational on Feb. 1 is the second-best in school history. She won the bronze medal in the event at the SEC Championships on Saturday.
Santos, a freshman, set Missouri records in the women’s triple jump both times she competed this season. Her best attempt came in the SEC Championships when she jumped 43 feet, 4.25 inches.
Vilches, also a freshman, broke another school record in the men’s high jump at the Missouri Intercollegiate meet on Jan. 11. His jump of 7 feet, 5 inches was the highest-ranked national mark from Missouri this season at No. 6.
Ward, competing in the men’s long jump, will be the only Tiger returning for his second NCAA Indoor Championship, after placing seventh in 2018. He holds the program record in the event after jumping 26 feet, 1.75 inches at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge last season. His season-best mark in 2019 is 25 feet, 7.5 inches.
