Odell Beckham trade an offer Giants ‘couldn’t refuse,’ Dave Gettleman says
In a conference call with reporters Monday, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman defended his decision to trade star wide receiver to the Cleveland Browns sayingthey received an offer “we couldn’t refuse.”
The Giants shocked the NFL by trading Beckham for a first-round pick, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers last week. The trade came not even a year after New York signed Beckham to a five-year, $90 million extension.
“We didn’t sign Odell to trade him, but things change. Another team made an offer we couldn’t refuse.” - GM Dave Gettleman New York Giants (@Giants) March 18, 2019
“I completely understand why people would debate the merits of this deal. This trade really won’t be able to be fully evaluated until we get further down the road. We did not enter this decision to trade Odell lightly.” - GM Dave Gettleman New York Giants (@Giants) March 18, 2019
Gettleman also defended quarterback Eli Manning, calling the narrative the veteran can’t play well anymore “a crock.”
Gettleman: On offense, you gotta have a QB run out there....this narrative that Eli is overpaid cant play is a crock. It really is. Defends way Eli finishes the season. There really wasnt a decision to make. #nyg Kimberly Jones (@KimJonesSports) March 18, 2019
