Maine killings labeled a domestic-violence homicide
RICHMOND, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say the deaths of a couple in Richmond were a murder-suicide.
Detectives say 46-year-old Kirk Alexander Jr. used a 9mm handgun to kill 37-year-old Niomi Mello before turning the weapon on himself.
Police believe the killings took place late Friday or early Saturday in their mobile home. The bodies were found Saturday by Mello’s 11-year-old son.
Mello’s sister told the Portland Press Herald that Niomi had been “in an unhealthy relationship.”
Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland described the killings as a domestic-violence homicide.
Family members of the victims say the two had been living together for several years. The boy is now staying with his father.
