William Jay “Bill” Schaafsma, 81, of Wichert, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 19, 2019) in Kankakee.
He was born July 10, 1937, in Wichert, the son of Jake and Gertrude Vanderwal Schaafsma. Bill married JoAnn Kinney on Sept. 7, 1962, in Momence.
Bill was a lifelong farmer in the Wichert area.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for two years.
Bill was a member of the First Reformed Church of Wichert.
He enjoyed his family, going to his kid’s and grandkid’s sporting events, and visiting with other farmers and friends.
Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Schaafsma, of Wichert; one son, Doug and Cara Schaafsma, of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Sue and Chuck Christensen, of Frankfort, and Jill and Ernie Shafer, of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren, Emma, Cal, Mina, Ty and Audra Schaafsma, Jack, Ben, Jade and Owen Christensen, and Max, Sam and Ava Shafer; and one brother-in-law, Ken Fruendt.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and one sister, Kathleen Fruendt.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, until the 11 a.m. funeral service at the First Reformed Church of Wichert.
Interment will follow in St. Anne Township Cemetery in St. Anne.
Memorials may be made to the First Reformed Church of Wichert or the Alzheimer’s Association.
