Mendoza Stops Avendano in Round 8
TEMECULA, Calif. (AP) _ Tito Mendoza of Panama stopped Fidel Avendano of Mexico in the eighth round of their scheduled 12-round middleweight bout at the Pechanga Entertainment Center on Saturday night.
Mendoza, who weighed 156 1/2 pounds, dominated every round before referee Robert Byrd stopped the bout with seven seconds left in the eighth. Although Avendano was hurt several times, he was never knocked down.
Mendoza, 23, raised his record to 18-3 with 14 knockouts. Avendano, 28, fell to 46-13-2 with 28 knockouts. He weighed 158 pounds.
The scheduled main event between Ali Baba of Ghana and former WBC flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul of Thailand was canceled because Sasakul failed to provide the California Athletic Commission with a negative blood test for hepatitis.
The 12-round bout between the top two rated WBC flyweight contenders was scheduled to be a title eliminator and also for Baba’s WBC International title.
Baba has a 16-0 record with 13 knockouts while Sasakul is 37-2 with 25 knockouts.
