Reggie Lewis’ Stolen Banner Back at Boston Garden
BOSTON (AP) _ The stolen green-and-white banner bearing the retired number of the late basketball player Reggie Lewis was back home on Tuesday.
Police following a tip found it in the bedroom of a suburban teen-ager. It had been raised to the rafters in Boston Garden on Wednesday night and stolen three days later.
Boston Garden officials who vowed to recover the banner by Tuesday’s hockey game offered a $5,000 reward for information and set up a hotline. A call to the hotline led to the recovery.
``You knew they were going to find it. If it was in Massachusetts and you showed it, you knew someone was going to tell on you,″ said Dennis Johnson, the Celtics star whose own retired No. 3 hangs with No. 35 for Lewis, No. 33 for Larry Bird and No. 32 for Kevin McHale.
Police in suburban Melrose, where the banner was found, were not releasing the suspect’s name because of his age, Melrose Detective Tom Ehler said.
