Agreement to be signed regarding the Spencer hydro-electric facility
Representatives of three agencies planned to officially enter into an agreement Monday regarding the Spencer hydro-electric facility on the Niobrara River.
At a Monday afternoon meeting in Kearney, officials with the Nebraska River Basin Alliance, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Nebraska Public Power District were to sign the purchase agreement for the eventual transfer of assets and water rights associated with the facility.
In 2015, the three entities signed a memorandum of understanding to transfer assets and water rights associated with the Spencer facility from NPPD to the river basin alliance and the game and parks commission.
Doing so will allow those two agencies to protect all uses of the river, including recreation, agriculture and wildlife.
“Monday’s signing is seen as an important step in the transfer of water rights and other assets as the entities work together to protect the river, its flows, and the people, industries, fish and wildlife that use it,” a game and parks spokesperson said.
