Powerful odor prompts ICE to evacuate 118 detainees

SAN DIEGO (AP) — ICE says 118 female detainees were evacuated when a strong chemical odor emerged inside their residential unit in Southern California.

ICE spokeswoman Lauren Mack said Saturday the women were directed to an outdoor recreation area at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, where medical staff checked them to determine if any of them needed treatment.

All the detainees were found to be unharmed and were moved back inside the facility when it was deemed safe about 2 ½ hours after the odor was first detected late Friday. Mack says the stench was identified as a floor-stripping substance near the entry to the unit.
