Mariners, Angels’ Players Suspended
NEW YORK (AP) _ Anaheim’s Todd Greene and Seattle rookie pitcher Brett Hinchliffe were suspended for three games each Wednesday by the American League for last weekend’s brawl.
Greene charged the mound after being hit in the fourth inning Sunday night by Hinchliffe, who had just given up a homer to Troy Glaus that cut the Mariners’ lead to 5-3. Seattle went on to win 8-5.
Greene and Hinchliffe exchanged punches and were ejected along with Angels pitcher Tim Belcher. On Friday, Glaus had been hit by a Jamie Moyer pitch and Greene connected on the next pitch for a grand slam in a 9-5 Angels’ win.
Greene had the players’ association appeal the penalty, meaning he can continue to play pending a hearing before AL president Gene Budig. It was not immediately known if Hinchliffe would appeal.
Both players were also fined.
