Daughter, Cousin Arrested In Double Slaying
UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. (AP) _ A college student and her cousin were arrested Sunday and accused of bludgeoning her father and aunt to death to gain an inheritance, police said.
Laura Kaldawi, 18, was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, said Bergen County Prosecutor Larry McClure. Her cousin, Patrick Lanzel, 19, of Lakewood, N.Y., was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
″The motive appears to be financial,″ McClure said.
Samir Kaldawi, 44, a banker, and his former sister-in-law, Georgette Kaldawi, 35, were found beaten to death with a metal pipe Saturday in their home in this affluent New York City suburb. Samir Kaldawi’s 9-year-old son, Gregory, was critically injured.
McClure said Lanzel is not Georgette Kaldawi’s son.
Miss Kaldawi, a freshman at Marymount College in New York, told police she was home for a weekend visit when she found her father and aunt dead and her brother critically injured.
Miss Kaldawi and Lanzel were being held Sunday at the Bergen County Jail on $1 million bail each. Arraignment was scheduled in Superior Court on Monday.
Gregory Kaldawi was in critical condition at Valley Hospital, where he was treated for head injuries.
