German Businessman Released after Court Denies Extradition
ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) _ Businessman Wolfgang Weber, whose extradition to Germany on charges of $30 million fraud was rejected by a Paraguayan court, has been released from custody, police said Friday.
Weber, a German citizen who has lived in Paraguay since 1969, cannot be extradited because he holds dual nationality, Judge Miguel Angel Lopez said earlier this week.
Lopez also said the extradition request did not have any official stamps.
The head of a dairy products company in Paraguay, Weber was arrested by Interpol in March at his luxurious cattle ranch 370 miles west of Asuncion.
He was accused of fraud in connection with a $30 million credit he received from Stuttgart banks for improvements to his business.
Weber was granted Paraguayan nationality in 1993.
