Ten-man Red Bulls beat NYCFC in inaugural New York Derby

HARRISON, New Jersey (AP) — Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice as a 10-man New York Red Bulls beat new crosstown rival New York City FC 2-1 on Sunday in the inaugural New York Derby of Major League Soccer.

New York bounced back after suffering its first loss of the season on May 2, while City had its winless stretch reach eight games with a fourth straight loss.

Wright-Phillips opened the scoring in the fourth minute after gathering a Lloyd Sam cross in front of goal.

Wright-Phillips scored his second in the 52nd minute for his fifth goal of the season after Lloyd Sam led a long counter attack, crossed the ball to the left wing where Sacha Kljestan fed Wright-Phillips for an easy tap in.

City’s Patrick Mullins scored in the 76th minute after the Red Bulls’ failed clearance deep in their area.

The Red Bulls’ Matt Miazga was sent off in the 36th minute after receiving his second yellow card.

In the day’s other game, Boniek Garcia scored in the 44th minute and Will Bruin in the 53rd as Houston spoiled Toronto’s home debut in its new-look BMO Field.

Jozy Altidore scored for Toronto in the 77th.
