Penguins’ Jagr Out With Injury

April 8, 1999

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The NHL’s top scorer will sit out a game with a slight groin injury.

Pittsburgh Penguins star Jaromir Jagr, who leads the NHL with 82 assists and 122 points in 77 games, didn’t travel to Philadelphia on Wednesday for Thursday’s matchup with the Flyers, team spokesman Tom McMillan said.

He said Jagr’s injury is minor, but Jagr opted to rest rather than risk more serious injury with the playoffs only five regular season games away.

``It’s nothing major, nothing catastrophic,″ McMillan said. ``You just don’t push it this time of year″ in anticipation of keeping players healthy for the playoffs. McMillan said officials will monitor Jagr day to day, and Jagr should be able to play at Detroit on Sunday.

The Penguins have lost their last seven games (0-5-2), and have won just one of their last 10.

The Flyers are 1-3-1 in their last five games and will be missing star center Eric Lindros at least until the playoffs, which start April 21.
