Bus Carrying Soccer Team Crashes

September 9, 2001

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) _ A bus carrying an amateur soccer team careered off a road and crashed on Saturday, killing four passengers and injuring 30, authorities said.

Officials said they believed the driver took a corner too quickly, and the bus jumped a wall and slammed into two houses in Volta Redonda, a city 80 miles west of Rio de Janeiro. No one in the houses was harmed.

There were 50 people on the bus, many of them in their late teens and early 20s, officials said. They did not release the names or ages of the victims.
