Celebrate 2019 at a Latino dance party
We know that technically, 2019 began a few weeks ago. But Edgar Mtanous and Bleu Duck are giving you another chance to ring in the New Year this weekend.
Back in 2017, Mtanous, who’s involved with a Mayo Clinic inclusion/resource group, started thinking about ways to bring Rochester community members together.
“Expression of our culture and dance is very important to us, and we found a gap there,” Mtanous said.
December and January would be wonderful times to celebrate, he thought, but so many people travel and have other obligations in the winter months that a party on NYE didn’t seem feasible.
Now in its second year, the slightly delayed New Year’s party is a chance for Rochester’s Latino/a population to get together and share a night of fun and merriment – well after the busyness of the holidays has ended.
It’s still an opportunity to celebrate the previous year and look ahead, as well as mingle, dance, and listen to music at Bleu Duck. Mtanous said the event is open to members of the community – not just Mayo Clinic employees and families, as the event is not sponsored by Somos Latinos or the Mayo Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Based on the attendance last year, it should be another roaring success.
“It was close to midnight (last year) and you saw this fusion … of individuals of all cultural backgrounds and different age segments,” he said. “You had learners, physicians, and community members … all having a great time.”
Tickets were available on Eventbrite through Jan. 16, but more will be sold at the door, night-of, Mtanous said.
