Ga. Athletes Indicted in Rape Case
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) _ Two University of Georgia athletes were indicted on rape charges Thursday and a third player was cited for aggravated assault with intent to rape.
Basketball player Steven Thomas and football player Brandon Williams were indicted on charges of rape and aggravated assault with intent to rape. Williams also was indicted on aggravated sexual battery charges, and basketball player Tony Cole was indicted on a charge of aggravated assault with intent to rape
An affidavit released by police indicated that a female student had consensual sex with Cole on Jan. 14, but was accosted by two other men later that night in Cole’s dorm room.
All three players were suspended from their teams two days later pending the investigation, but were reinstated within two weeks.
District Attorney Ken Mauldin, basketball coach Jim Harrick, football coach Mark Richt and the players charged could not immediately be reached for comment.
