Suspected burglar shot and killed in Mount Oliver home invasion

A Mt. Oliver homeowner shot and killed an armed, suspected burglar during a home invasion early Thursday morning, according to Allegheny County Police.

Allegheny County 911 got a report of a home invasion and burglary in progress shortly before 5:20 a.m. along Sherman Avenue.

When police and paramedics arrived, they found an unidentified man with a single gunshot wound. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Allegheny County Police Homicide detectives were called to investigate and determined the deceased man had broken into the residence through a second floor window accessed from the rear porch roof.

County police said the lone resident of the house woke up when the intruder broke the window. When he left his bedroom with a gun, he came upon the intruder, who had a small, assault-style weapon. The resident, who also wasn’t identified, fired at the intruder, striking him once. The resident then called 911, police said.

The intruder didn’t have any identification on his person, and was taken to the Allegheny County Medical examiner’s office to be identified via fingerprints, according to investigators.

At this point, police said, it’s unclear why the man broke into the residence or if he acted alone.

Police said the District Attorney’s office was consulted and preliminarily determined that the resident will face no charges at this time. Once the investigation is over, the DA’s office will determine what, if any, charges will be filed, police said.
