American Tourist Crushed in India

November 18, 1999

GAUHATI, India (AP) _ An 80-year-old American tourist was crushed to death in a national park when the elephant she was riding was attacked and killed by another.

Mary Brumder, who was on vacation with her grandson Mathew, was killed Wednesday at Kaziranga National Park in northeastern Assam state.

As eight elephants were being ridden in single file through tall grass, a male elephant tried to push past the female elephant carrying Mrs. Brumder and three other people, park officials said.

The female elephant fell, and as the two elephants struggled, Mrs. Brumder was crushed and trampled. The male elephant used its tusk to rip open the stomach of the downed female elephant, park officials said.

The elephant driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, but the other passengers were not seriously hurt, park officials said.

Mrs. Brumder was from Milwaukee, the Statesman newspaper reported.

The park has 46 elephants, and rides are conducted daily. The park had just reopened to tourists Nov. 1, following its annual closure during monsoon rains.
