Christmas Magic to give downtown Florence holiday sparkle

FLORENCE, S.C. – South Carolina’s Magic City will experience a bit of Christmas magic from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday.

The 100 block of West Evans Street and the 100 block of South Dargan Street will play host to the second annual Downtown Christmas Magic event. The event will feature free hot cocoa and s’mores stations, the lighting of the tree in front of the Florence County Complex at 5:30 p.m., a tacky-sweater contest and screenings of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” in the James Allen Plaza, plus ice skating across from Hotel Florence.

The Grinch screening will be the 1966 animated version. It will start at 6:30 p.m. with “Christmas Vacation” to follow at 7:20 p.m.

The ice skating rink will also be available on Saturday. People can skate free for 20 minutes. There is no charge for skates.

The Holly Jolly Main Stage will feature the Florence Symphony Orchestra at 6 p.m., Pure Harmony at 6:30 p.m., Derrick Bull and Remnant at 7 p.m., the Palmetto Youth Academy’s Eagle Squad and Fine Arts teams at 7:30 p.m., My Father’s House Ministries at 8 p.m., and Pee Dee TUBAChristmas at 8:30 p.m.

There will be decorated downtown storefronts, a Jingle and Mingle kids’ area filled with holiday crafts and games, a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus, a holiday gift market and gift wrapping station, and extended shopping hours with downtown merchants.

Admission is free.

Downtown development manager Ray Reich said Friday’s event was going to be special. He said other than last year’s Downtown Christmas Magic event, Florence had not had a Christmas event downtown in around 40 years. He said this year’s event would be better than last year’s.

Reichadded that the city has placed a music and Christmas light show on the 100 block of South Dargan Street.
