BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Brad Cresse homered twice in a 10-run fourth inning as two-time defending national champion LSU earned a return trip to the College World Series with a 14-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.

The Tigers (46-17) won the South II regional and will play in the CWS for the 10th time in the last 13 years.

Cresse finished with seven RBIs, including the two-run homer and grand slam in the fourth. His other RBI came on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

LSU set an NCAA tournament record with five homers in one inning. Clint Earnhart, Wes Davis and Danny Higgins also homered in the inning.

Doug Thompson (11-3) earned his second victory of the tournament, scattering seven hits and allowing two unearned runs in eight innings.

Craig Jacobs (4-4), the starter for Fullerton (47-17), allowed eight runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings.



Miami 7, North Carolina 4

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff each hit a two-run homer and top-ranked Miami advanced to the College World Series for the fifth time in as many seasons under coach Jim Morris.

Miami (49-10), which won national championships in 1982 and 1985 under Ron Fraser, hit 24 home runs in five regional games.

The Hurricanes took a 4-1 lead with a four-run third keyed by Burrell’s 16th homer of the season. North Carolina (42-23) pulled within 5-4 in the seventh on a homer by Jay Madeira, one of the Tar Heels’ four to lead off an inning.

Huff hit his homer in the bottom of the inning.

North Carolina 4, South Carolina 2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) _ Brian Roberts’ two-run homer in the seventh sent North Carolina to the championship game.

South Carolina (44-18) took the lead in the first on a two-run homer by Derick Urquhart, but North Carolina got a run on Tyrell Godwin’s RBI double in the sixth and tied it when Jay Madeira scored on a passed ball in the seventh.

Chris LaMarsh then singled and scored on Roberts’ 13th homer of the season.



Florida St. 16, Auburn 10

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Matt Diaz went 4-for-6 and drove in six runs as Florida State advanced to the College World Series for the 16th time.

The top-seeded Seminoles (53-18), who took a 13-0 lead after three innings, avenged last year’s regional final loss to Auburn (46-18).

Diaz hit .750 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in the four regional games. Florida State scored 76 runs in the regional, setting a record with 19 per game.



S. Alabama 6, VCU 0

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ Mike Fischer pitched a four-hitter as South Alabama defeated Virginia Commonwealth to reach the regional final.

Fischer (11-1), who also beat VCU earlier in the regional, struck out seven and walked two as the Jaguars moved into Sunday night’s final against Southern California. The winner will go to the College World Series.

Juan Pierre had a two-run single, and Eben Wells hit a solo homer for South Alabama.



Illinois 13, Wake Forest 4

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Craig Marquie hit a three-run homer during a seven-run first inning as Illinois eliminated Wake Forest.

Illinois advanced to the regional final, where it will play top-seeded Florida for a berth in the College World Series.

The Illini sent 11 batters to the plate in the first, staking starter Jason Anderson to a comfortable lead he never relinquished.

Anderson (6-0) pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs. Danny Borrell (3-3) took the loss for Wake Forest.



Texas A&M 6, Washington 4

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Chad Hudson hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning as Texas A&M advanced to the regional final.

The Aggies will play Mississippi State for a spot in the College World Series.

After Hudson’s homer broke a 4-4 tie, Jason Tyner tripled home another run for A&M. Reliever Eric French (3-1) pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the victory.



Long Beach St. 10, N. Carolina St. 6

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Terrmel Sledge had four hits, including a two-run homer, as Long Beach State set up a title game against Alabama.

Sledge drove in three runs and scored three times for the 49ers (40-21-1). His homer in the eighth inning triggered a four-run rally that gave Long Beach a 10-5 lead.

North Carolina State finished its season 41-23.



Georgia Tech 6, Oklahoma St. 5

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Stephen Donaghey and Jay Hood both homered with two outs in the ninth inning and Georgia Tech advanced to the regional championship game.

The Yellow Jackets (41-21) were to play Arizona State on Sunday night, but severe weather in the area threatened to delay the game.

With Georgia Tech trailing 5-1 in the ninth, Oklahoma State reliever Frank Bludau gave up a leadoff single to Scott Prather and hit Eric McQueen with a pitch. Two strikeouts later, Donaghey homered.

Matthew Boggs then singled off Danny Prata of the Cowboys (40-21) before Hood homered.
