Judge denies man’s request to avoid jail time in hit-and-run

May 15, 2018

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man charged with driving drunk when he struck a family celebrating Halloween in Salem has had his request for no jail time in exchange for a guilty plea denied.

The Salem News reports that a judge Monday proposed a 2 ½-year jail sentence for 54-year-old Dexter Mitchell in connection with the case.

Authorities say the Gloucester man hit a woman from North Attleborough and her 10-year-old twin daughters as they crossed a street the night before Halloween in 2016. Police say he then drove from the scene before returning after getting rid of some beer cans in his car.

Mitchell has already served 90 days in jail.

He is scheduled to court next Monday to decide whether to plead guilty or head to trial May 31.
