Fight Broken Up By Prison Guards Bullets; 1 Dead, 2 Injured

May 27, 1987

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) _ Prison guards opened fire to break up a racial fight in an exercise yard Tuesday, killing one inmate and wounding two others, a prison official said.

Percy Kimbrough, 29, of Los Angeles was shot once in the chest after nine inmates ignored a warning to stop their fighting, said San Quentin Prison spokesman John Reid.

The fight between black and Hispanic prisoners involved the use of prison- made plastic weapons, he said.

Kimbrough, who was black and was serving a 15-year-to-life sentence for second-degree murder, was pronounced dead in the prison infirmary. Two Hispanic prisoners also were shot, and a black inmate was stabbed in the incident. Conditions of the injured were not immediately available.

Inmates identified as being involved in the melee have been confined to their cells, Reid said.

After the fight, guards found eight plastic weapons in the yard, Reid said. The inmates use plastic because it cannot be detected by prison metal detectors, he said.
