George Jones Develops Pneumonia

March 13, 1999

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Country singer George Jones has developed pneumonia and has been placed back on a ventilator as he recuperates from a car crash, his record company said Friday.

He remained in critical but stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Doctors said Jones has been placed back on a ventilator to help him breathe and to save his strength. He is responding to medication and is healing slowly, according to a statement from Asylum Records.

``George is a fighter and I know that he will overcome this setback,″ said his wife, Nancy. ``I truly believe that everyone’s prayers and well wishes are making a difference.″

Jones, 67, suffered a collapsed lung and a lacerated liver when he crashed his sport-utility vehicle into a bridge near his Franklin home on March 6. He was talking to his stepdaughter on a cellular phone at the time.

He had been on a ventilator from the day of the accident until Tuesday.
