July 6, 2018

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy who was pulled from a pond in Massachusetts has died.

Police say they were called to Bell Pond in Worcester around 8 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a distressed swimmer.

Officers tried to help people already in the water to find the boy, but their search came up empty.

Divers were called to the scene, and they found the boy about 70 feet (21 meters) from the shore.

The boy was transported to a local hospital, and he was pronounced dead early Thursday morning. His identity has not been released.

Police say the pond’s lifeguards left at 7 p.m., and they had posted signs saying the beach was closed for the rest of the day.
