Parking Scam Hits Mexico City
MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Valet parking usually means handing over your car keys for a few hours. In Mexico City, it could mean handing over your car.
Police said Thursday they were investigating at least three gangs who set up fake valet parking companies in Mexico City and made off with scores of cars during the past few months. Most of the scams took place downtown, particularly around the Palace of Fine Arts, where parking is hard to find on concert nights.
Wearing the uniforms of bogus companies, gang members would take cars from customers, give them forged parking tickets, collect $6.40 _ and then steal the car.
So far, no arrests have been made.
The Mexico City legislature began drawing up plans Wednesday night for a law to regulate parking companies.
