TOKYO (AP) _ Roberto Luis Trotta and Omar Andres Asad took advantage of defensive laspses and Velez Sarsfield of Argentina upset AC Milan of Italy 2-0 Thursday to win the Intercontinental Cup, soccer’s world club championship.
Trotta scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half after Alessandro Costacurta fouled Asad in the penalty area. Seven minutes later, Asad intercepted Franco Baresi’s backpass for goalkeeper Sebastiano Rossi and scored.
″We aren’t a very well-known team yet, but it’s not the past that matters,″ Velez coach Carlos Bianchi said.
″I can’t believe we lost,″ AC Milan coach Fabio Capello said. ″But the team that makes mistakes loses. That’s soccer.″
AC Milan, the European Champions Cup winner, has struggled all season. It is 11th in the Italian League with a 3-3-4 record, was eliminated by crosstown rival Internazionale of Milan in the third round of the Italian Cup, and must beat Casino Salzburg next Wednesday to advance to the final eight of this year’s European Champions Cup.
AC Milan, owned by Italian Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi, won the Intercontintal Cup in 1969, 1989 and 1990 but lost 3-2 last year to Sao Paulo of Brazil. Velez won the Liberators Cup, South America’s club championship, for the first time this year.
