UConn women to play Baylor, Virginia next season
As the start of the 2018-19 campaign draws closer, UConn’s schedule for future seasons is quickly coming into focus.
The Huskies have extended their series against Baylor and agreed to a home-and-home series against Virginia starting next season, a team spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.
UConn will host Baylor in 2019-20 with the return trip taking place in the Lone Star State in 2020-21. The two teams are already scheduled to play Jan. 3 in Waco, renewing one of the more competitive rivalries in women’s college basketball. The Huskies last played Baylor in 2016 — collecting a 72-61 win in Storrs — and are 4-2 all-time against the Lady Bears.
In addition to playing Baylor, the Huskies will also host Virginia in 2019-20 and travel to Charlottesville the following season.
Both series were first reported by Carl Adamec of the Journal Inquirer.
The back end of the series with Virginia will serve as a homecoming for combo guard Megan Walker, who grew up 90 minutes outside the Cavaliers’ campus in Chesterfield, and will be a senior at the time. The trip will also mark Geno Auriemma’s return to the place where he served as an assistant before beginning his distinguished coaching career at UConn in 1985-86.
With those games in place, most of the heavy lifting concerning UConn’s 2019-20 schedule appears to be done. Last week, the Huskies announced they’ve agreed to a home-and-home series with Oregon starting next season at home and continuing in 2021-22 in Oregon. They’ve also revealed plans to host Tennessee in 2019-20, renewing one of the sport’s fiercest rivalries. The two teams will meet again in Knoxville during the 2020-21 season.
UConn is also in midst of four-year agreements with California and Oklahoma that will continue this season and into the future. The Huskies are scheduled to visit Oklahoma on Dec. 19 and California on Dec. 22.
Next season, the Huskies will also host Notre Dame and visit Vanderbilt as part of a homecoming for guard Crystal Dangerfield.
