SCHERERVILLE _ A northwestern Indiana man says he smashed the window of a car to stop shoplifters outside a busy store. SOUTH BEND _ A member of the Mishawaka Common Council has been selected to replace a South Bend lawmaker who resigned from the Indiana House to take a job with a labor union. WSBT-TV reports Ross Deal was selected by local Democratic Party officials after Democratic Rep. Joe Taylor announced this month he was leaving to take a position with the United Auto Workers International Union. SENT: 130 words.
_ POLITICAL SIGNS STOLEN: A judge approves a deal to allow a town manager to avoid a criminal conviction in the theft of 40 political yard signs the day before an election in 2015.
_ INDIANA UNEMPLOYMENT: Indiana’s unemployment rate edged higher in November to 3.6 percent.
_ 1988 CHILD SLAYING: An Indiana man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for the 1988 abduction, rape and killing of an 8-year-old girl.
_ WHITE RHINO-ZOO: A zoo in South Bend is expected to get a white rhino. The South Bend Tribune reports that an exhibit for the male rhino will also be developed with help from a $50,000 grant from the St. Joseph County Council.
_ SOUTH BEND-HIT-AND-RUN: A man blamed for a hit-and-run crash that killed three people in South Bend now faces a new charge after the death of a toddler.
_ NEIGHBOR KILLED: An Evansville man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for the death of a neighbor who was killed when a bullet traveled through an apartment wall.
