Baby Whale Found on Beach Dies at Sea World
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ A newborn pygmy sperm whale that beached itself near Patrick Air Force Base died Friday at Sea World marine park in Orlando, park officials said.
The 2-foot calf, orphaned when its mother died in the surf, had been cared for by animal handlers at Sea World since late Tuesday. But they had not expected him to survive since most whales only seek land when they are in extreme difficulty.
The animal apparently died from a combination of factors, said Sea World research biologist Dan Odell. The results of a necropsy to determine the cause of death are not expected for several weeks, he said.
The cause of death of the 10-foot mother whale also has not been determined.
