Five Deported From Australia

July 23, 2000

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Five people with links to terrorist organizations have been deported from Australia in the last year to reduce risks of attacks on the Sydney 2000 Olympics, according to a published report.

Three had suspected or proven links with Middle Eastern terrorist groups, one to a central European organization and one to an Asian terrorist group, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

A sixth man, already under surveillance by a foreign intelligence agency for terrorist links, had been caught trying to board a cargo ship bound for Australia, the Telegraph said.

The reports quoted an unnamed security source as saying it was usually ``extremely rare″ to find people with terrorist links in Australia and the time frame made it obvious they were linked to the Olympics.

Australia’s Olympic security authorities were planning to meet with several national Olympic committees later this week to outline security planning for the Sept. 15-Oct. 1 games.

Australia’s federal Attorney-General Daryl Williams, who is responsible for national security, has said Australian agencies and police were well equipped to handle security during the Olympics.
