MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Eight children were injured, two of them critically, when a car hit them outside their elementary school Tuesday.

``A car jumped the curb and hit some kids lined up outside the school waiting for their parents to pick them up,″ said Teresa Taylor, watch commander for the Memphis Fire Department. ``Eight kids were struck. Two are in bad shape.″

The collision took place about 3:30 p.m. outside Chimneyrock Elementary School.

Five of the injured children were taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Catherine Donovan said. A boy and a girl, both 5 years old, were in critical condition; three 9-year-old girls were in serious condition.

An elderly woman driving a sedan struck the children as they walked after classes were dismissed, The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported.

A woman who answered the phone at the school confirmed that children had been struck by a vehicle but referred questions to a school spokesman who was at the scene and could not be immediately reached for comment.
