Air Force 42, Wyoming 28

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) _ Joe Pastorello rushed for two scores Saturday, one on a 62-yard run, as Air Force defeated mistake-prone Wyoming 42-28 in a Western Athletic Conference matchup.

Big plays fueled the Air Force victory, as the Falcons made a school-record six interceptions to offset Wyoming’s statistical edge in yardage and time of possession.

Air Force (2-1 overall, 1-1 in the WAC) gained all of its 377 yards on the ground with its wishbone attack. The Falcons scored twice in the opening six minutes on two 78-yard plays - Obasi Ohuoha’s TD run on the game’s third play and Carlton McDonald’s interception return.

Pastorello led all runners with 128 yards on nine carries against a poor- tackling Wyoming defense that was befuddled at times by the Falcon wishbone.

The loss for Wyoming (1-2, 0-1) overshadowed a fine performance by receiver Ryan Yarborough, who had a school-record 13 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Ohuoha’s 78-yard touchdown run came on a pitch from Jarvis Baker. The junior started left then cut back across the field for the score.

Wyoming committed the first of its many mistakes after driving 65 yards when McDonald intercepted Joe Hughes and ran 78 yards untouched into the end zone to put Air Force up 14-0 six minutes into the game.

Cowboy Ryan Christopherson fumbled at midfield later in the quarter and Air Force scored on a drive highlighted by Antoine Banks’ 45-yard run down the right sideline to the 4-yard line.

Hughes was intercepted again on Wyoming’s next series by free safety Eldrick Hill, who raced 25 yards to the 6-yard line. Wayne Young punched it in from the 2 for a 28-0 first-quarter lead.

Wyoming coach Joe Tiller switched quarterbacks in the second quarter, but sophomore John Gustin was intercepted twice in less than three minutes, with the second leading to a 2-yard score by Pastorello and a 35-0 Air Force lead with 6:36 left in the half.

Hughes returned later in the quarter and got Wyoming on the scoreboard with a 24-yard pass to Yarborough.

Wyoming, which had 531 yards in total offense, scored late in the third quarter as Dwight Driver went in from the 2 to cut the lead to 35-14, but Pastorello dashed any comeback hopes with his 62-yard scoring run on the Falcons’ next possession.

Yarborough’s second TD catch at the end of the third quarter pulled Wyoming to within three touchdowns, 42-21, and the Cowboys ended the scoring on a 20- yard pass from Gustin to Eric Edmond late in the fourth quarter.
