High school closed by pest infestation to reopen

September 4, 2018

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A high school in Tennessee that officials say closed this month due to a pest infestation is set to reopen.

WMC-TV reports Kirby High School will reopen Tuesday. It was closed for four days last week. Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson tweeted Monday the situation still isn’t ideal, but the agency consulted with the health department and decided to reopen.

Some people say the school has struggled with cockroaches, rodents and snakes, though County Health Department Director Alisa Haushalter has said this is a first for the school.

The schools executive director of business operations, Kathy Eikenberg, says crews worked for several days to clean the site. Principal Steevon Hunter says the school is considering hosting classes after school and on Saturdays to make up for missed coursework.
