Liberty County remains ‘red’ with overwhelming vote

November 8, 2018

It was probably a given, but with the addition of 3,298 new voters in Liberty County since the March 2018 primary, nothing is a sure thing.

Voters in Liberty County have overwhelmingly voted Republican since the election of George W. Bush in 2000 and that trend hasn’t changed.

On Tuesday, only five candidates challenged Republicans on the ballot: Shirley Layton in the State Senate District 3 race, Fred Lemond who ran for State Rep. District 18, and locally Joe Robertson, Jr. in the County Clerk’s race, Ronnie Davis in the JP Pct. No. 2 race, and Monique McDuffie-Brooks in the JP Pct. 6 race. All were soundly defeated except for Davis who ran unopposed in the Raywood area.

Most of the wins for Republicans were in the 68 percent to as high as 89.11 percent in races that were affected. Liberty County races were mostly settled during the contentious March primaries.

In virtually every way, it was a historic election cycle for Liberty county.

The early vote record for a mid-term election was shattered with 14,183 this year. The previous record was in 2010 with 7,985. The total mid-term election record was set also in 2010 with 16,297. This was the first election following the passage of Obamacare and the election of President Barack Obama in 2008.

During this election, there were 44,196 registered voters in Liberty County and 20,649 or about 46.71 percent voted setting a new record for mid-term elections.

“I believe it was also a record for registering new voters during the time between the March primary to Oct. 9 before the general election,” said Liberty County Tax Assessor-Collector Rick Brown.

His office registered 3,298 new to Liberty County voter rolls during that period.

The population of the county at the last census in 2010 was 75,643, but that number has grown exponentially since then. The U. S. Decennial Census estimates at least an 8 percent increase putting the growth at 81,704, but County Judge Jay Knight estimates the county will top 105,000 in the 2020 census.
