12 Seek Vacant County Council Seat
Luzerne County Council plans to interview 12 applicants for a vacant seat on council.
Two applicants — Eileen Sorokas and Elaine Maddon Curry — are former county councilwomen.
The other 10 applicants are Hal Gabriel, Gene Camoni, Lois Komensky, Bonnie Markowski, James Kennedy, Dominic Butchko, Michael Giamber, Patrick Bilbow, Michael McGlynn and Martin Dartoe.
Gabriel is principal at Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. Bilbow is principal of Martin L. Mattei Middle School in Pittston.
Camoni and Giamber served on the county’s citizen manager search committee in 2016. Butchko is a Forty Fort councilman.
Markowski resigned in 2011 as a Luzerne County jury commissioner, an elected position eliminated by the county home rule charter. Dartoe was appointed last year to the county Children and Youth Advisory Board.
Council members will conduct public interviews Monday and Tuesday. The county posted the interview schedule on its website but did not release resumes and other application documents.
The vacancy was created by Edward Brominski’s resignation. There’s one year left on the term in office, and council plans to vote to fill the seat at its Feb. 12 meeting
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter in Luzerne County, a county resident for at least one year and a registered Democrat since Nov. 3, 2015 — the date Brominski, a Democrat, was re-elected.
Council is an 11-member governing board. Voters this year will elect six council members to four-year terms that begin in January 2020.
