Police investigate 4 smash-and-grabs on the North Side

Police are seeking the public’s help to identify one or more suspects involved in four smash-and-grab burglaries in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood in the past month, officials said.

In each incident, an unidentified man is accused of breaking into businesses and making off with stolen goods, including $2,500 worth of Steelers gear, a bicycle, office equipment, cash and several bottles of liquor.

The four burglaries each remain under investigation, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Alicia George said.

Police said they cannot confirm whether the incidents are connected, but investigators have recognized similarities among them, George said. Officials urged anyone with information to call detectives.

On Tuesday, officials released multiple images and videos from surveillance footage related to the burglaries. Authorities have not released any further descriptions of the possible suspect or suspects.

The four incidents in question include:On Friday, Aug. 10, a male suspect was captured on surveillance video shortly after an early-morning break-in at Bear Dog Bicycles near Western and Galveston avenues in the Allegheny West section of the city’s North Side, police said. The suspect broke the store’s window and made off with a bicycle.Four days later, investigators responded to an alarm set off about 3 a.m. at the Fine Wine & Good Spirits store on East Ohio Street. Investigators learned that an unidentified man had thrown an object through the store’s window and made off with several bottles of liquor, police said. The suspect was captured on surveillance video riding a bicycle in the area, George said. He was last seen on foot on East Ohio Street walking toward Cedar Avenue.Less than four hours later, around 6:45 a.m. Aug. 14, a man threw a large rock through the glass door of The Pittsburgh Fan store on Federal Street near PNC Park, surveillance footage shows.About 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, a man forced entry into the Cardello Building on Reedsdale Avenue in the city’s North Shore, police said. He took off with computer and office equipment and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police asked anyone with information about any of the incidents to call Zone 1 detectives at 412-323-7201. Tips can remain anonymous.
