ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Buffalo center Wayne Primeau scored one goal and assisted on another and goalie Andrei Trefilov turned away 44 Washington shots as the Sabres beat the Capitals 3-1 Tuesday night in an exhibition game.

After a scoreless first period, Primeau gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 14:18 of the first period. Dixon Ward made it 2-0 when he scored 33 seconds into the third period.

Washington’s Jason Allison cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal at 1:49 of the second before Jason Dawe scored the game’s final goal at 4:20 off assists from Primeau and Alexei Zhitnik.

Buffalo managed just 18 shots on goal, including four in the third period, when the Capitals fired 21 at Trefilov.

The game was played before a crowd 3,369 at the Knickerbocker Arena.
