Is Amazon behind possible $130M Idaho distribution center that would employ 2,000?
NAMPA — Amazon has six different jobs posted online linked to a Nampa location, furthering speculation that a distribution center may be headed to the Treasure Valley.
The postings could be tied to an 850,000-square-foot warehouse in development near the Ford Idaho Center called “Project Bronco,” but officials could not confirm that the warehouse would be for an Amazon facility.
The jobs include a full-time shift assistant, driver resource manager, driver trainer, on-road driver assistant, TSC engagement senior coordinator and field quality assurance. The period of time in which the jobs were posted ranges from 10 days to more than a month ago. Beth Ineck, Nampa’s economic development director, said she could not comment on the job postings at this time.
In June, Panattoni Development Company Inc., the same developer that has built multiple Amazon distribution centers around the world, applied for a conditional use permit with the city to build a large warehouse facility on 111 acres on the southwest corner of East Franklin Road and Star Road in northeast Nampa. The Nampa Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously granted the permit at a public hearing in July.
At the public hearing, Deborah Nelson, representing the applicant, said the developer is looking to invest a minimum of $130 million into the facility. Brent Collins with Panattoni said construction is expected to take about 13 months, and the warehouse expected to be operational in late 2019.
The applicant has not confirmed that an Amazon distribution center is planned as the project, but the bottom of the permit application listed the project name as “PREDEV — Amazon BTS.” Panattoni also has several other big-name corporations as its clients, such as FedEx, H&M, PetSmart and The Home Depot.
At a Nampa Building and Site Design Committee meeting in July, Jim Terry with Ware Malcomb architectural firm said the warehouse’s function is a distribution center, mostly for smaller packages. He said the warehouse will use heavy automation to transport the packages, some of which will feature lasers that can read barcodes.
Nelson said the developer expects the project to employ at least 2,000 people. Ineck said in a report for the project that the development could become one of the largest employers for the city and is expected to generate more than $1 million a year in tax revenue. At a recent Nampa City Council meeting, Mayor Debbie Kling said Project Bronco is the largest business ever to come to Nampa.
