Teen who sent school death threats last year gets probation

February 20, 2018

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — A teen who sent death threats to a Vermont high school last year has been sentenced to probation.

WPTZ-TV reports that 19-year-old Josiah Leach appeared in federal court in Rutland on Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors said last week that they would recommend a sentence of five years of probation.

Leach pleaded guilty last year to transmitting threats including a “murder list” targeting 16 students and staff at South Burlington High School on April 20, 2017.

A judge ruled in November that Leach had violated his conditions of release by being discharged from a mental health program.

Leach apologized for making the threats and referenced the Parkland, Florida, shooting last week, telling the judge he cried and realized the impact his threats had on the community.
