BOSTON (AP) — The major league-best Boston Red Sox look for their 15th win in 18 games as they host the Texas Rangers in the middle game of their series. The Red Sox, who lead the second-place Yankees by 2 1/2 games in the AL East, send Hector Velazquez against the Rangers’ Yovani Gallardo. Boston’s J.D. Martinez is 10 for 23 with three homers, eight runs scored and 10 RBIs the last five games.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former NBA player Kermit Washington has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in charity donations on vacations, shopping sprees and plastic surgery for his girlfriend. Prosecutors say he’s also been ordered to pay nearly $1 million in restitution. Washington pleaded guilty in November in federal court in Kansas City, Missouri, to making a false statement in a tax return and aggravated identity theft.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The PGA Tour has eliminated a FedEx Cup playoff event as part of a revamped schedule that will allow its season to end a week before the football season begins. The tour will have 46 events over 41 weeks, down from 48 tournaments this year.
