Pacific 78, New Mexico State 66
STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) _ Corey Anders scored 19 points and Tim Nordahl had 16 as Pacific beat New Mexico State 78-66 Wednesday night, keeping the Aggies winless in six road games.
Rayne Mahaffey added 12 points, Mark Boelter had 11 and Adam Jacobsen had 10 assists to go with eight points to help Pacific (6-6, 2-2 Big West) defeat the Aggies (4-7, 1-2) for just the third time in the last 15 meetings.
Bostjan Leban, Encoh Davis and William Johnson each scored 15 points for New Mexico State which was outshot from the field 46 percent to 38 percent. All of Leban’s points came on 3-pointers.
The Aggies pulled to 43-42 on a basket by Davis but Pacific put together its best run of the night, outscoring New Mexico State 13-1 over the next four minutes to regain command 56-43 with 9:10 left.
Jacobsen, who missed all four shots in the first half, drained a 3-pointer to start the flurry and Mark Boelter scored eight of his points in that span, including two 3-pointers.
New Mexico State got back to within 67-58 with 2:44 left on Leban’s 3-pointer but Anders’ answered with a trey for Pacific and the Aggies got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Pacific, which fell behind 7-0 and didn’t score until five minutes into the game, nevertheless led 31-29 at halftime, with Mahaffey scoring seven of his points in the opening period.
The Aggies used a 10-0 run, started by William Johnson’s 3-pointer, to go up 21-16 with 6:03 left in the first period. But Vic Trierweiler’s dunk started a 10-3 burst that put Pacific back on top 26-24.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half with Pacific making just 39 percent of its shots while New Mexico State converted on 37 percent of its shots.
