MIDLOTHIAN, Texas (AP) _ A 6-year-old girl was in critical condition Wednesday after being mauled by an escaped tiger, then injured in a car accident on the way to the hospital.

Katie Baxter was attacked late Tuesday while she and her mother were visiting friends who kept the tiger, sheriff's deputies said.

Katie's mother, Tammy Baxter, was injured trying to get the animal off her daughter, and they were both injured again when Mrs. Baxter lost control of her car on the way to the hospital.

The girl underwent surgery for multiple injuries and was in critical condition Wednesday at Dallas Children's Medical Center, said hospital spokesman Brian Alford.

Her mother was treated and released from another hospital.

Ellis County Sheriff's Department spokesman James Martin said the tiger was caged at the owner's property.
