WVC Sends 10 To Medal Stand

By Eric ShultzMay 26, 2019

SHIPPENSBURG — Matt Prebola wasn’t getting too far ahead of himself in his states debut.

The Tunkhannock freshman was the only ninth-grader competing in the Class 3A javelin throw at the PIAA Track and Field Championships. He made it to Shippensburg as the event’s seventh seed, and all he concentrated on was staying in that top-nine in order to reach the final flight.

“I thought I’d have an OK chance. Winning it, probably not,” Prebola said. “But I knew I was heading into it with a decent throw.”

Prebola got closer to state gold than he imagined.

Reaching 199 feet, 1 inch in the preliminary flight, Prebola not only reached the finals but finished among the very best in the state Saturday morning. He ultimately took third place, which went down as the Wyoming Valley Conference’s second-best showing at this year’s state meet.
